Friday, December 29, 2000 ::: If you are wondering about public transportation in faraway cities, Metro Planet is the way to go. Except for Chicago, where only a map of Downtown is given, although why I am not entirely sure.
Friday, December 15, 2000 ::: since I haven't been updating so superfrequently I thought I'd add a transcript of the spanish inquisition sketch to cheer people up.
Sunday, December 10, 2000 ::: lots of demographic maps of Chicago using census data. snazzy stuff. The ones showing demographic changes from 1980-1990 I think are particularly the most interesting.
Monday, December 04, 2000 ::: After thinking a fair amount about offering up some links for today, I think that I'm not going to. I had found some interesting stuff, but didn't note it down (!) and so now I forget where it was. Today I found out that my old email address will cease to exist in two weeks. very sad. more links tomorrow, I promise.
Sunday, December 03, 2000 ::: This was a busy week, so my updating was perhaps not as frequent as would have liked, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Anyway, I've decided to dedicate this posting to recent readings. I just finished reading King Leopold's Ghost which was really quite fascinating, as I had previously not read much of anything about european colonialism in africa. I have also just started reading a biography of mayor Daley (the old one). I haven't gotten very far, so I can't say too much in the way of how good it is. And this is next on my list. I'm trying to read more fiction.
Wednesday, November 29, 2000 ::: speaking of magazines, I haven't been reading mother jones as much as before. I don't care for the name, and the articles tend to be continuously in a state of moral outrafe and exasperation, but there are often some very insightful things to be found within its pages.
I haven't updated in a while and I must admit to feeling a little guilty about it. speaking of such, I bought a copy of New York magazine this weekend and read the whole thing. It feels so wrong, but it's just so damned entertaining to read. And I already knew they had the whole thing online, but I just bought it anyway. I'm hopeless.
Tuesday, November 21, 2000 ::: So I heard this interesting story on NPR this morning about penguins washing up on the shores of Rio de Janeiro. I couldn't find the story on NPR's site, but CNN picked it up. Apparently a lot of people have adopted the penguins as pets.
So this is a touch disturbing. I can imagine directions a few years from now: "get on at Nike and ride until adidas, where you can change to the Microsoft line, and get off at the J. Crew stop.
Monday, November 13, 2000 ::: So people tell me wonders about copernic.com and that everything there is all savable and whatnot. I have yet to try it out, so I'm reserving judgement. More links forthcoming. honest. really. just wait.
Sunday, November 12, 2000 ::: So it is my intention to put all my postings that do not pertain to linguistics here, and have all the linguisticky links here. assuming that this, the very first preliminary and test post will end up working out properly and generally according to my wishes.
